A number of online business owners recognise the importance of link building within SEO but become consumed with the number of links they have to their websites instead of the quality of these links. This is a big mistake. The websites which are providing a link to your website are of great importance and must be chosen carefully.

If you create links to your web pages from inappropriate websites, this will not only not benefit your search engine optimisation campaign but can actually damage your development too. There are a few different types of websites which should be avoided when building links to your site.

You should not be building links from spam websites. Spam sites are low quality sites which offer little value. They have a bad reputation in the online community because they are of no benefit to internet users. The search engines don’t respect websites of this kind and will not rank them highly in their search results. Those which do land on spam sites will not likely spend long exploring what is on offer because it will be apparent the website is spam. Therefore, they will be unlikely to follow a link to your website anyway. Associating with sites like this through the production of links will damage your reputation with the search engines and with internet users too.

Another type of website you do not want to have linking to your pages is a website which is using black hat SEO. Those using SEO techniques of this kind get punished by the search engines. This type of manipulation is not acceptable and the search engines are cracking down. If you are not using black hat SEO because you realise the damage it can do, don’t jeopardise the future success of your business by linking with another business which is using an unethical approach.

Again, if you have a link from a site like this to your own, you will be judged by the search engines and others by the businesses you are associated with. The site you have a link from will be punished and penalised and you business will suffer too.

It is also not beneficial to create links from irrelevant websites to your web pages. It may be tempting to try and create a link from a popular website to your own but if this site is inappropriate, it is not going to be advantageous.

If you are hoping to direct relevant traffic to your website through the development of links, you must have links from sites which are relevant to your business industry and therefore those that will be attracting suitable interest and traffic. It is not wise to create links from competitors but others related to your market is recommended.
