I was reading a post last week on SEOMoz – http://www.seomoz.org/blog/beyond-good-and-evil-in-seo-11331 which I found interesting as it discusses why some firms may look to use black hat SEO techniques in order to “manipulate” the search engine results page. You could say that all SEO’s do this in the standard techniques they use as for the purpose of “fixing” a website to become more noticeable by Google. This could be seen as cheating your way to the top as studying how you can manipulate the Google search algorithm to make websites rank higher than others is in some ways what SEO is all about. I suppose the main difference between white hat and black hat SEO is how far you go to manipulate the results and whether or not the way in which you get the results is within Google’s guidelines or not.  The most popular black hat techniques are building of links in bad neighbour hoods and duplicating content from other similar sites. Sometimes a duplicate content penalty can be lifted in a short space of time but I have seen cases where a website has been under penalty for quite some time because black hat techniques have been used.

Black Hat SEO

I don’t in anyway agree with black hat SEO as with the correct SEO techniques, results are just as possible in a shorter space of time without the risk of a Google penalty. Standard SEO techniques in my opinion are all based on best practices which are advised by Google. Most techniques like Meta Tag optimisation are suggested by Google as a good start for any SEO campaign as it helps to define a website in terms of what it offers to online users. This combined with unique and informative content about what your site offers will carry more weight in the long run as effectively you are not trying to trick Google into thinking you are the most relevant for what you are offering, you are simply making sure that your site is the most relevant for the services you offer and the results will follow.
